Ding Ding. Strolling along the short yet bustling Shau Kei Main Street East, one may often be mesmerised by the nostalgic sights of Hong Kong trams gracefully gliding along the tracks, transporting passengers through time and memories. These beloved and iconic vehicles are a quaint reminder of Hong Kong’s cultural fabric in the 20th century, earning their endearing nickname from the charming sounds they emit as they approach.
Have you ever pondered blending such metallic past of ‘Ding Ding trams’ with technological innovations? Two brilliant minds of St. Mark’s School, Claire CHENG (4A) and FUNG Siu Yu (4B) took on the BuilDING our Future Grand Challenge organised by Tramplus and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and embarked on an awe-inspiring project titled, ‘共融號 環保電車’, redefining ‘Ding Ding trams’ as a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity.
Its seamless juxtaposition of the historic charm of Hong Kong tramways and state-of-the-art technology have left an indelible mark on the adjudicating panel and the audience. The team proudly emerged as 2nd Runner-up in the Chinese Division, and was also crowned 3rd Place of Audience Choice Award.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. S. H. Ho and Mr. Y. M. Chun who have guided and inspired our girls to create this technological marvel that epitomises the co-existence between the past, the present and the future. Congratulations!
