Creative writing holds the power to inspire, evoke emotion, and illuminate the values that bind us as a society. The art of storytelling allows young minds to explore salient themes of humanity and connect deeply with readers through vivid language and compelling narratives.
We are proud to announce that one of our writing connoisseurs, CHENG Claire Tsz Yan (5A), has been awarded the prestigious Silver Award in the Good People, Good Deeds English Writing Competition 2024, organized by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. Competing against an impressive array of entries from across Hong Kong, her short story, Sowing the Seeds of Benevolence, stood out for its insightful portrayal of kindness and the transformative impact of benevolent actions.
Reflecting on her inspiration, our award-winning student shared, ‘Looking back to when I joined the Good People Good Deeds Writing Competition, I wanted to write a story that could move and motivate. My story was about how I learned to respect others—people who are different from us. Adrian was an autistic child, whom I had grown intimate with and started to understand. I wish to raise my readers' awareness on equality and how we should learn to embrace diversity. To define good deeds, I believe we always think about doing something —helping an old lady cross the road, lending someone your umbrella, etc. I, for one, define good deeds as not doing something—simply not looking at people with judgmental lenses. I am honoured that my writing has earned me recognition from the judging panel, and I hope that I have managed to bring about positive change to my fellow readers.’
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Claire for this well-deserved recognition, which speaks to both her creative acumen and her deep understanding of the competition’s core values of compassion and empathy. Her success also reflects the dedication of our English department in nurturing students to express themselves through the written word.
