Clang Clang. Gliding through the heart of Hong Kong’s vibrant streets, the city’s iconic trams stand as living monuments of history and innovation, weaving together the past and future in their ceaseless journey. These beloved ‘Ding Ding’ trams are more than mere transport: they are the pulse of the city, humming with memories and boundless potential.
This spirit of ingenuity and nostalgia was brought to life by two visionary teams from St. Mark’s at the 2024 BuilDING Our Future Grand Challenge organised by Tramplus and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
CHAN Lok Yan (5A), LAU Rain (5A), LI Pui Hiu (5B), and TANG Tsz Kwan (5E) envisioned a future where Hong Kong’s iconic tram stops transcend functionality to enhance passenger comfort and well-being. Their proposal, Hong Kong Tramwait, integrates smart panels for real-time tram updates, solar-powered fans, air purifiers, and bespoke stamp collections to encourage exploration. Seamlessly blending sustainability with heritage, their ingenious project garnered the distinguished accolade of 2nd Runner-up in the English Division.
Meanwhile, in the Chinese Division, CHENG Claire Tsz Yan (5A), WONG Kwan Chak (5A), who were shortlisted as one of the Top Ten, dazzled with their creative project, 叮「喜」全城, a concept that reimagines the tram as a platform of shared joy and urban connectivity, resonating deeply with the judges and audience alike.
The achievements of these scientific minds exemplify the spirit of St. Mark’s — where curiosity and creativity know no bounds. Their success reflects not only their talent but also their ability to reimagine a Hong Kong icon with a vision that merges history, technology, and sustainability. Bravo to our young trailblazers!
